Turk Island Landfill, Union City

Development of Closed Landfill

  • WGV
    helped
    its
    builder
    client
    design
    a
    new
    residential
    program
    for
    development
    of
    a
    closed
    landfill.
    The
    6-acre
    site
    still
    contained
    approximately
    100,000
    CY
    of
    buried
    household
    and
    construction
    refuse,
    which
    needed
    to
    be
    relocated
    to
    a
    neighboring
    landfill
    property
    before
    development.
    WGV
    helped
    coordinate
    the
    refuse
    relocation
    between
    the
    client
    and
    owner
    of
    the
    nearby
    landfill.
    This
    remediation
    effort
    called
    for
    not
    only
    the
    movement
    of
    the
    refuse,
    but
    also
    the
    import
    of
    approximately
    200,000
    cubic
    yards
    of
    clean
    fill
    and
    cap
    for
    the
    host
    site;
    or
    approximately
    20,000
    truckloads
    of
    fill.

  • Consequently,
    the
    project
    required
    extensive
    regulatory
    permitting,
    community
    outreach
    and
    a
    processing
    of
    an
    Environmental
    Impact
    Report
    (EIR)
    for
    approval.
    WGV
    also
    coordinated
    the
    engineering
    and
    design
    of
    the
    overall
    residential
    program,
    working
    extensively
    with
    the
    city
    and
    surrounding
    community
    to
    both
    limit
    the
    impacts
    of
    the
    remediation
    on
    the
    nearby
    residents,
    and
    ensure
    that
    the
    development
    would
    blend
    seamlessly
    into
    the
    existing
    neighborhood.
    The
    33-unit
    project
    is
    now
    under
    construction.
